Note on how to spot a BMS playing dead !!!!

Hi all, I received a battery with a “dead” BMS and following symptoms:

  • no LEDs are able to light up
  • Reset button does not activate any LED’s
  • Battery pack does not have a bad or Low cell and pack has enough voltage to power the BMS
  • RS232 cable and PBMS tools does not reactivate the BMS

This BMS is not dead, its had a partial or failed firmware update attempt. Or it possible that this BMS unintentionally entered the firmware update state.

All you need to do the recover this BMS is the complete the firmware update process:

  • Step 1 - First try to upload firmware following the normal update procedure. If this does not work try step 2.
  • Step 2 – Start the firmware update procedure on another working BMS, when the programs “prompts” with the question “are you sure you want to continue” then unplug the RS232 cable from the working BMS, plug it into the “playing dead” BMS and then press continue.
